Position Summary

The University of Arizona Foundation is seeking a motivated and goal-oriented professional to join the Principal Gifts and Regional Development team as a Senior Associate Director of Development. The Senior Associate manages the identification, education, cultivation, and solicitation of major and principal gift prospects, while personally managing a major and principal gift portfolio in the East Coast region. The Senior Associate reports directly to the Assistant Vice President, Principal Gifts and Regional Development. This is a remote position. Preferred home base include but are not limited to New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware or Maryland. The bulk of travel will be to New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major and principal gift level individual, corporate and foundation prospects located in the Northeast and Florida.
  • Develop and execute strategic, personalized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for an assigned portfolio of 50-70 major-gift ($50,000 level or greater) donor prospects (individual, corporate and foundation) through personal visits (in-person or Zoom), letters, phone calls, email and other methods.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the university and represent UArizona’s needs and interests.
  • Develop personalized strategies for all assigned donors and prospects which builds, maintains, enhances and stewards relationships while furthering donors’ philanthropic objectives.
  • Help to support and promote a culture of philanthropy and work effectively as part of the greater Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement (PAE) team.
  • After an initial 3-6 month on-boarding period, execute an agreed upon annual metric of at least 75-125 current or prospective donor visits and the successful closure of 10+ major/principal gift proposals per year, with an expectation of $750,000 raised annually after the initial on-boarding period (with incremental increases after the first year).
  • Maintain current and accurate records of donor prospects in the PAE computer records system (Lynx). On a weekly basis, enter contact reports, gift solicitations, and other communications with donors. Ensure all contributions are properly documented and handled in accordance with the University of Arizona Gift Policy.
  • Work with PAE Marketing and Communications to develop print and online development materials related to the assigned areas.
  • Partner with, and effectively utilize, the development professionals and resources of the PAE including campus-based development teams and leadership (including but not limited to Deans, faculty, staff, central administration); and UA Foundation Central Services: Gift Planning, Annual Giving, Leadership Annual Giving, Alumni and Constituent Engagement, Marketing and Communications, Prospect Development, Financial Services, Information Services, and Foundation Relations.
  • Host in-person or virtual prospect meetings with UArizona and/or PAE leadership, administration, faculty and staff as it pertains to closing leadership gifts.
  • Utilize the common systems, policies and procedures adhered to by PAE team members.
  • Creatively leverage outreach activities (e.g. tours, lectures, regional events etc.) to develop new and cultivate existing major gift prospects.
  • Represent the UArizona and PAE at public events.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and follow all Federal, UArizona and PAE policies and procedures, including UArizona and PAE scholarship and financial aid policies, as well as the University of Arizona Gift Policy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of development and fund-raising principles and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with strong ability to build and nurture effective working relationships with UArizona leadership, donors, PAE colleagues, and UArizona faculty, administration and staff members.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the University of Arizona mission, strategic plan, and case for philanthropic support.
  • Ability to understand and disseminate complex ideas with clarity and to develop and create a written case for support.
  • Experience developing and executing plans for large fundraising initiatives.
  • Ability to inspire cooperation and participation.
  • Ability to make good decisions and to exercise good judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with volunteers, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite products, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • The ability to travel via commercial airlines and long distance/local road travel.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.


Preferred Qualifications.

  • Experience with demonstrating success in securing major gifts in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in constituent databases.
  • Experience applying fundraising principles and procedures.


Work Environment:

  • Regular travel will be required.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including working on weekends/evenings, overnight stays, and travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.
  • The Senior Associate Director of Development will be required to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary.
